Runavík to put Fjøruvegur’s final section out to tender

The final section of Fjøruvegur in Runavík is expected to go out to tender within weeks, while just over a year remains before the deadline for state funding expires, Kringvarp Føroya reports.

Traffic remains heavy on Fjøruvegur, but the covered trench still needs to be built. Runavík Mayor Tórbjørn Jacobsen expects the project to be ready for tender in about four weeks.

In 2020, Runavík Municipality and the Ministry of Finance agreed to build a new Fjøruvegur in connection with the Eysturoy Tunnel. The municipality was to build and take responsibility for the road, while the state would provide DKK 55 million in support as the work progressed.

Part of the project has been completed, but work remains, including a concrete tunnel or covered trench.

Under the agreement, Fjøruvegur was supposed to be completed in 2024. However, the road is still unfinished, and the law providing state support for the project expires at the end of 2027.

About half of the project has been completed. Jacobsen said he remains hopeful that the remaining work will also be finished.
