Tórshavn council to reconsider mountain bike route

Kringvarp Føroya reports that Tórshavn City Council will discuss a proposed cycle route near the capital at its meeting on Thursday, although there is no proposal for councillors to decide on.

Councillor Tróndur Sigurðsson has asked for the matter to be brought back before the council for further discussion and a decision.

In a letter published on August 27, Mayor Elsa Berg said the council’s culture committee would propose that Tórshavnar Municipality, together with mountain bikers and the specialist federation for cycling and triathlon, review plans for a mountain bike route at Vesturvarði and examine other options.

Berg said there was no longer a majority on the council in favour of the route at Vesturvarði. However, the matter was postponed at the culture committee’s September 8 meeting and is now listed for Thursday’s council meeting.

Horse riders have said that horse-riding trails and a cycle route should not be located in the same mountain pasture.
