Nordic Sugar cuts Nakskov layoffs to around 70

Around 70 employees will lose their jobs when Nordic Sugar ends sugar production at its Nakskov factory, DR reports. The figure is significantly lower than the initial estimate of up to 150 affected positions.
Nordzucker, which owns Nordic Sugar, announced the figure in a press release following 21 days of negotiations with employee organisations.
About 50 jobs will remain at the facility’s packing department and service centre, while around 30 employees will be offered work elsewhere in the group.
Employees who are dismissed will be offered help with, among other things, finding new jobs.
Nordic Sugar managing director Jannik Olejas called the agreement an important milestone, saying the aim throughout the negotiations had been to limit redundancies and create the best possible future prospects for employees.
The company is also in talks with sugar beet growers about the future. Nordic Sugar said the discussions were progressing well, but it does not expect to provide further updates or a result until later in the autumn.
Sugar production at Nakskov is scheduled to stop in January 2027, after 144 years. Denmark’s entire sugar production will then be concentrated at the factory in Nykøbing-Falster.
