South Iceland police commissioner indicts driver over fatal motorcycle crash

The Police Commissioner of South Iceland has indicted a driver over a fatal crash in June, mbl.is reports. The driver allegedly turned in front of a motorcycle on the South Coast Road at the junction with Kerlingardalsvegur road in Mýrdalshreppur municipality.

The indictment, issued on September 11, charges the car driver with criminal and traffic offences. It states that on Saturday, June 20, the driver was travelling east on the South Coast Road and turned left to enter Kerlingardalsvegur without sufficient care and caution.

The indictment also alleges that the driver was unable to control the vehicle safely because of sleep deprivation. The car entered the path of the motorcycle, which was approaching from the opposite direction.

The motorcycle struck the front of the car, throwing its driver from the bike. The motorcyclist died almost immediately at the scene from the injuries sustained.

A civil claim has also been filed against the car driver, seeking a total of 47 million Icelandic krónur in compensation.
