Klæmintsgjógv in Hestur is officially the largest cave in the world, as confirmed on July 19 following 3D scanning conducted within the cave.

“This is a great story for us,” commented Guðrið Højgaard, director of Visit Faroe Islands. She anticipates that this new world record will attract more tourists to the Faroe Islands, significantly benefiting the local tourism industry.

Previously, the title for the world’s largest cave was held by Rikoriko in New Zealand, which measured 221,494 cubic meters. The recent 3D scans revealed that Klæmintsgjógv is approximately seven thousand cubic meters larger, and when considering submerged areas, it is about 50,000 cubic meters larger.

The scanning was carried out by technical expert Henry Henderson-Genefaas, alongside Gethin Wyn Roberts, a data specialist at the Environmental Agency, and Anne Marie Berg Norby, a surveyor at the National Board of Public Works.

The results of the scanning can be viewed online, showcasing the largest cave in the world in Hestur.
