Kymi Ring hosts first motorsport event in Iitti despite challenging weather conditions
This summer, the Kymi Ring in Iitti hosted its first motorsport event, the only one of the season, despite challenging weather conditions. Rain did not dampen the hopeful atmosphere surrounding the revival of the racetrack, which had faced financial difficulties until it was purchased this winter by a Hungarian-led investment group. The Kymi Ring’s future is of public interest, as millions of euros in government funding were previously invested in its establishment.
Jarkko Niemelä, chairman of the Ring Race Club, expressed satisfaction with ticket sales exceeding expectations, noting that for the first time, indoor facilities were available for spectators. The event attracted 70 riders competing in eleven different classes, with four of those contributing to Finnish championship points. The track and seating areas now meet national competition standards and were readied with the help of over 200 volunteers.
Conditions for racing were difficult, with heavy rain falling just before the races commenced, but the weather improved in time for the start. Erkki Puhakka, a board member and race official, noted the impact of weather on tire grip and visibility. The youngest participants were just 12 years old, with 13-year-old Aatos Pirttinen from Seinäjoki winning the Moto 5 class. He emphasized his adaptability to challenging conditions, having switched from motocross to track racing.
After previous safety issues, improvements were made to ensure the racetrack meets safety standards for both motorcyclists and spectators. Puhakka confidently stated that Kymi Ring is now the safest track in Finland, with event organizers ensuring adherence to safety protocols. Plans for international competitions at Kymi Ring are in the works for next summer.
