Delays end technical school plans in Hafnarfjörður

Plans to develop a new Tækniskólinn technical school at Flensborgarhöfn harbour in Hafnarfjörður have been abandoned because securing the land took longer than expected, mbl.is reported. Relations between the school and Hafnarfjörður municipality remain good.

“We were arranging a plot of land where there were many landowners and several existing properties, and it took more time than expected. In the end, the timelines simply did not match, so Tækniskólinn could not wait for us any longer,” Orri Björnsson, leader of the Independence Party in the town council and chairman of the municipal council’s executive committee, told mbl.is.

He said the school’s development had already been delayed and had become too difficult to proceed with.

Other plots in the capital region are available where development could move faster, Orri said. However, he said the decision was not a setback for Hafnarfjörður.

“Everything is continuing at full speed here. There is extensive development, and we will certainly find something good to put by the harbour instead of Tækniskólinn. There is no reason to worry about that. There is always demand for good plots in a location like this,” he said.

Orri said there was no disagreement between the municipality and the school following the decision.

“They dealt with us very well and simply could not wait any longer. That is really all that happened. They could not accept further delays because the project needs to get under way,” he said.

He added that cooperation with the school had gone very well and that the only issue had been the delays related to the land.
