Eighty earthquakes recorded near Sundhnúkur Crater on Reykjanes Peninsula
In the past 24 hours, approximately 80 small earthquakes have been recorded near the volcanic system at Sundhnúkur Crater on the Reykjanes Peninsula. Significant land subsidence has occurred within the municipality of Grindavík.
According to a natural hazard expert, recent seismic activity is similar to that observed in previous days. While the ground is still rising, the rate has slowed. The expert warned that if significant changes occur, land uplift could happen more abruptly.
Furthermore, some seismic activity has also been detected at Grjótavatn, located northwest of Borgarnes, since late yesterday. The strongest tremors reported have been over magnitudes of two. While earthquakes are not uncommon in this region, the frequency has notably increased since 2021.
