Danish police report rise in shootings linked to Swedish nationals amid social media criminal recruitment
In recent weeks, Denmark has witnessed several shootings allegedly linked to Swedish nationals. Danish police have indicated that local criminals are using “certain social media platforms” to offer tasks that might yield rewards ranging from 200,000 Danish kroner and up.
Investigations have revealed social media groups primarily composed of Swedish-speaking users advertising criminal activities supposedly taking place in Denmark. Advertisements in these groups explicitly solicit individuals for criminal acts, claiming they are not amateurs and will handle everything provided the respondent is serious. Some posts seek murderers with fees ranging from 300,000 to 500,000 Swedish kronor.
Emojis play a significant role in the communication among users to describe criminal services. For example, “an apple” can signify a reward of up to 100,000 kronor, while “a gun” may represent a reward of up to half a million, typically associated with hits. This coded language is part of a wider trend where social media is used to recruit capable shooters and bombers.
Concerns have been raised over the impact of these offers on vulnerable youths, as they may also target Danish individuals since they have access to the same platforms. Currently, the primary demographic observed engaging in these criminal behaviors appears to be young Swedish men in precarious situations.
In response to the rise in violence and the involvement of Swedish nationals in crime in Denmark, authorities have heightened controls at the Danish-Swedish border and established search zones in Copenhagen to curb gang members from carrying firearms.
