President Halla Tómasdóttir celebrates LGBTQ+ rights at Reykjavik Pride festival in Iceland

During the Reykjavik Pride festival, President Halla Tómasdóttir addressed a crowd of thousands participating in the colorful parade and festivities that commenced at Skólavörðuholt and concluded at Hljómskálagarður. Expressing her emotion about her initial presidential duties, she remarked on the significance of celebrating LGBTQ+ rights and the joy embodied in the vibrant march.

She noted, “The history of this rights struggle is one of conflict, but by framing the fight with joy, especially through the parade, you all have raised a remarkable effort, dear friends. In my mind, you represent the living embodiment of bravery.”

Halla highlighted the troubling global landscape regarding human rights, emphasizing the need for passionate advocates and champions for the cause. She stressed her commitment to support marginalized communities, notably the transgender population, as they navigate their fight for existence and recognition.

“I believe the president’s role includes advocating for minority groups that are forced to fight for their basic right to exist. I will stand behind all LGBTQ+ individuals, and I particularly want to protect and support the transgender community in this context,” she declared.
