The retired freezer trawler Helena, formerly known as Nónhamar, will be sunk in Borðoyarvík on Thursday. Approximately 75 tons of materials have been removed from the vessel.
Janus Joensen, director of Faroe Dive, stated that the sinking of the Helena is significant for the Faroe Islands’ diving industry, benefiting both commercial diving and tourism.
Helena is set to be sunk about 150 meters from the shore of Norðoyri. The design will ensure that the front part of the ship rests at a depth of 15 meters, while the rear will lie at around 30 meters.
The project involves several partners, including the Norðoya Divers Association, the Norðoya Rescue Association, Mekanor led by Kjartan Hansen, Kav led by Vilhelm Hansen, and Dýpi led by Brian Nýggjagarð. Oliver Joensen serves as the chairman of this collaborative effort.
Additionally, on Monday evening at 8 p.m., the Faroe Islands’ Seamen’s Days will host a presentation on the Faroese diving industry, followed by an opportunity for attendees to visit the Helena. The presentation will take place at Sjónámi in Klaksvík and is free to the public.
