Kourani removed to Syria after serving one-third of sentence

Mohamad Th. Jóhannesson, formerly known as Mohamad Kourani, was removed from Iceland on Tuesday and has arrived in Syria, his home country, mbl.is reports.

Ragna Bjarnadóttir, director-general of the Icelandic Prison and Probation Administration, confirmed the move to mbl.is.

Kourani was sentenced to eight years in 2024 for attempted homicide and aggravated assault after stabbing two men inside the OK Market store.

He was granted parole after serving one-third of his sentence under temporary amendments to Iceland’s legislation on the enforcement of criminal sentences.

The amendments allow foreign offenders to be released earlier on condition that they are subject to a ban on re-entering the Schengen Area, as in Kourani’s case.
