West Jutland farmers seek dialogue after fertiliser law

Farmers in Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality are inviting residents to a public meeting after expressing frustration over a new fertiliser law adopted about a week ago, DR reports.

The farmers will explain why they believe the law will hit not only agriculture but also several related industries, according to Jacob Spangsberg, chairman of the West Jutland Farmers’ Association.

“We supply a lot of raw materials to dairies and feed companies. We also need a lot of help from carpenters, bricklayers and plumbers. That will affect them, because as things stand, quite a lot of farms will have to close,” Spangsberg said.

The purpose of the law is to reduce nitrogen emissions from agriculture and thereby improve the aquatic environment in Danish waters.

The meeting cannot change the law, which was adopted last week. However, Spangsberg hopes local politicians will take notice and contact politicians in the Danish parliament.
