Rauma rail stop cost estimate rises by nearly €1 million

The estimated cost of a new railway stop in Rauma has risen significantly, Yle reports, after tenders issued by the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency in the spring.

The estimate stood at €3.45 million in the spring. In May, the agency separately invited bids for landscaping the stop’s shelter and retaining wall. The offers received were substantially higher than expected, pushing the total project estimate up by nearly €1 million.

Rauma’s technical committee has proposed that the city government approve additional funding for the railway stop. The city government will forward the matter to the city council for a decision.

Costs have also increased because soil surveys carried out during the design process showed that the stop must be built on pile-supported slabs. According to an assessment by Rauma’s technical committee, this is a very expensive foundation method.

The landscaping costs were also higher than estimated because the stop is planned to be of a considerably higher standard than a basic platform.

In addition to granting extra funding, the city government decided that the €1 million allocation budgeted for 2027 will be needed already this year.

Passenger train services are scheduled to return to Rauma next spring after a break of nearly 40 years.
