Suðuroy tunnel preparations progress as planned

Preparations for the Suðuroy tunnel are progressing as planned, Kringvarp Føroya reported. Drilling through Traðarhamar is under way, while Vikmar is carrying out additional seabed surveys in Skúvoyarfjörður and Suðuroyarfjörður.

There are no plans to amend the law on preparing the tunnel, which the Løgting approved on February 25, Minister Jacob Vestergaard said in a written reply to Løgting member Jenis av Rana.

P/F Suðuroyartunnil submitted its preliminary project to Landsverk for approval on May 21. Landsverk is reviewing it with specialists, while the preliminary projects for roads and tunnels on land are expected to be submitted for approval this autumn. The design work is estimated to take one year.

Environmental impacts are also being assessed. The report is expected to be completed around the turn of the year and submitted to the Environment Agency, Vestergaard said.

The remaining geological surveys are under way. Drilling connected to the Sandvíkarberg tunnel has been completed at Skálafjall, and drilling has also been carried out at Sandarfløtturin.
