Proposal would extend food contamination rules to all production

Kringvarp Føroya reports that a proposal has been made for a new regulation setting maximum limits for certain contaminants in food.

The regulation would replace the current rules, which date from 2009. Its core provisions would remain unchanged, but its scope would be expanded. The existing regulation applies to food intended for export, while the new one would cover all food production.

The proposed rules would follow the European Union’s limit values. They would also specify the maximum penalty for breaches, which could be up to two years in prison.

The proposal would further introduce limit values for medicinal residues in food made from animals. The EU’s limit values would apply in those cases as well.
