Schools and parents urged to improve pupils’ reading skills

Kringvarp Føroya reported that both schools and parents are responsible for strengthening pupils’ reading skills, following the results of a new PISA survey.

Regin Marnersson, headteacher at Skúlin á Fløtum, a school, said he was not surprised that so many pupils struggle to read and understand texts. One reason, he said, is that many children and young people read too little.

Janus Vang, chair of Heim og Skúli, a parent association representing parents and guardians of children in the Faroese public school system, shares that assessment.

Parents can contribute by showing interest in their children’s reading and schooling. Vang and Marnersson said schools and parents must work together to strengthen pupils’ reading skills.

However, Marnersson said schools also need to do more to improve reading proficiency.
