Zelensky and Iceland’s foreign minister discuss support in Keflavik

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met Icelandic Foreign Minister Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir at Keflavik Airport on Wednesday afternoon, mbl.is reports.

Gunnarsdóttir said they had an informed and candid discussion about the situation. She said she had reaffirmed Iceland’s firm support for Ukraine’s defence against Russia’s war of territorial conquest.

“We listened to Ukraine’s requests for support, and the Icelandic authorities will continue to provide essential defence, economic and humanitarian assistance, particularly in the areas of air defence and energy, as the Ukrainian people unfortunately face a harsh winter,” she said.

Ukraine’s energy minister, Denys Shmyhal, and Rustem Umerov, head of the country’s intelligence service, also attended the meeting.

Icelandic authorities have provided substantial support to Ukraine’s energy sector. Contributions from Iceland to a dedicated energy fund have helped Ukraine, while Icelandic energy companies have donated spare parts and equipment to help maintain infrastructure that has come under continuous Russian attacks.

Ukraine’s intelligence service is currently working to strengthen cooperation on air defence among European countries.
