Minister calls for tighter rules on cosmetic surgery

Social Affairs and Health Minister Wille Rydman says the law regulating cosmetic surgery should be tightened, Yle reported. He said he would bring the matter before Parliament later this autumn.

In a text message to Svenska Yle, Rydman said he would propose amendments to the supervision law. The changes would clarify the duties and role of the Permit and Supervisory Agency, he wrote.

Rydman also said the government of Prime Minister Petteri Orpo had decided to continue funding the Centre for Client and Patient Safety. This would strengthen the position and safety of clients and patients, he said.

The death of social media personality Olivia Oras in connection with liposuction has drawn public attention in recent days to the safety of cosmetic surgery. Rydman described the case as shocking.
