South Park changes name to South America to mock Trump

The animated series South Park will be renamed South America for its 29th season, in a parody of US President Donald Trump’s repeated attempts to rename geographical features, DR reports.

The show’s creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, said the change was inspired by Apple and Google adopting Trump’s preferred name for Lake Ontario. “Inspired by the courage and patriotism of Apple and Google, we are changing the name of South Park to South America,” they said in a joint statement, according to Variety and Ritzau.

Trump renamed the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America shortly after taking office in January 2025. Last week, he also signed an order proposing that Lake Ontario be renamed Lake America. Apple and Google have adopted the name, while the lake continues to be called Lake Ontario in Canada.

According to The Guardian, Trump proposed another name change on his social media platform Truth Social just one day before South Park announced its own. He suggested renaming the US state of New Mexico New America and accompanied the proposal with an AI-generated video. Trump does not have the authority to change the name of a US state unilaterally.

The new name is the latest in a series of jokes targeting Trump and his administration. The show has repeatedly satirised the president, including in the season 27 episode Sermon on the Mount, which won an Emmy at the weekend.

In the episode, Trump is portrayed as Satan’s lover. The creators introduced the storyline as a recurring theme during the season, including a scene in which a completely naked, AI-generated Trump walks through a desert.

On Monday, Parker and Stone followed up on X with an image of an animated Trump without trousers holding an Emmy statuette. The caption read: “So you finally got your Emmy.”

Season 29, under the name South America, will premiere on September 17 at 4 am Danish time and will be available to stream on Paramount+.
