STI cases rise in latest figures

More people are testing positive for sexually transmitted infections, according to the latest figures reported by Kringvarp Føroya (KVF). In the first half of 2026, 69 cases of chlamydia and eight cases of gonorrhoea were registered.

That means 8.3 per cent of chlamydia tests and 1 per cent of gonorrhoea tests were positive. The figures suggest that the totals for 2026 could exceed those recorded last year, when 6.8 per cent of chlamydia tests and 0.6 per cent of gonorrhoea tests were positive.

Most of the registered chlamydia cases were among people aged 20 to 24.

Since 2024, nearly twice as many women as men have been tested, but a significantly higher proportion of tests among men have been positive.

The Health Authority advises people to protect themselves and get tested if they suspect they may have been infected.
