Dagur warns against downplaying Trump’s image of Iceland

Dagur B. Eggertsson, a member of Iceland’s Social Democratic Alliance and an alternate member of Alþingi’s Foreign Affairs Committee, has warned against downplaying an image posted by US President Donald Trump on Truth Social that shows Iceland and Greenland as part of the United States, mbl.is reported.

“Today Trump posts this image. Some will try to make light of it. I will not be one of them, no more now than before,” Dagur wrote in a Facebook post.

He said Icelanders must confront and respond to the changing position of international affairs.

Dagur said influential people had argued that Iceland should “keep a low profile” and avoid discussing the issue in the hope that the country would be forgotten, even after the Greenland issue arose.

He said Iceland urgently needed to maintain trusted relations with key allies in Europe, particularly because of the outcome of the referendum.

“Now we need to build bridges, not burn them. Surely we can agree on that. And the foreign minister must call the US ambassador in for a meeting and demand explanations. We cannot pretend that nothing has happened,” he wrote.
