SVT’s Politikbyrån examines Social Democrats’ polling slump

SVT’s Politikbyrån is broadcasting live on Monday evening, with guests discussing the Social Democrats’ fall in opinion polls and the latest issues in the 2026 election campaign.

Annika Strandhäll, chair of the Social Democratic Women’s Association and an outgoing Social Democratic member of parliament, former Social Democratic MP Jan Emanuel and Expressen domestic politics commentator Viktor Barth-Kron are taking part in the programme.

Former Social Democratic leader Mona Sahlin is also appearing. During her leadership in 2010, the party recorded its worst election result since universal suffrage was introduced.

“It felt terribly heavy, I have to say. Despite the poor result, government power was still quite close,” Sahlin says.

Strandhäll attributes the party’s decline in the polls to mobilisation by the Tidö parties towards the end of the election campaign.

“The right has been fairly successful with attacks on us, both concerning our possible government alternative and attacks on Magdalena Andersson,” she says.

Sahlin says the campaign has focused too heavily on different government coalitions and argues that parties should return to substantive and ideological issues.
