A father accused of trying to kill his son, who is under 10, has been charged with attempted murder, Yle reports. The charge was filed at Helsinki District Court on Monday, according to district prosecutor Heidi Nyman.

The man, born in 1973, has been detained since the summer. The alleged offence took place on June 21 or 22 near the turnaround by the Savukoski museum bridge in Pyhtää, in the Kymenlaakso region.

The father and son had been on a weekend trip together. The father stopped the incident himself and called the emergency services. Police arrested him at the scene.

Helsinki District Court ordered the man detained on probable cause on suspicion of attempted murder. The boy was treated in hospital, and police have interviewed him.

Police have not commented on a possible motive or the method allegedly used. In July, the lead investigator, Detective Chief Inspector Tuomas Lindholm of the Helsinki Police Department, said police already had a preliminary understanding of the motive.
