More than 1,000 people gathered to honour Gunnar Þórðarson at a concert in Reykjanesbær, according to mbl.is. The event, titled Himinn og jörð, brought the town’s Ljósanótt festival to a close.

Rather than observing the customary minute of silence, festival-goers were asked to applaud Gunnar for one minute.

Ljósanótt visitors spent the festival’s final day attending events including a reunion walk, numerous concerts and art exhibitions, and entertainment for children.

Skólamatur also served guests its traditional Icelandic meat soup. Among those enjoying the meal was Reykjanesbær Mayor Vilhjálmur Árnason, who told mbl.is that he was pleased with the weekend and the weather for the time of year.

On the journey home the previous evening, Reykjanesbraut road appeared to glow like a red Christmas tree as large numbers of cars headed back to the city. The headlights of 5,572 guests illuminated the road between midnight and 10 a.m.
