Green Party would raise petrol prices by six kronor per litre

Sweden’s Green Party would raise petrol prices by six kronor per litre if its policies were implemented, party co-leader Amanda Lind said in an interview with SVT, which reported the comments.

Lind sharply criticised the Tidö parties’ environmental policies during SVT’s leaders’ interview, while also facing questions about the impact of higher petrol prices.

The government’s own investigator has said fuel prices need to reach approximately the same level as those in Sweden’s Nordic neighbouring countries, where petrol currently costs about 10 kronor more per litre. Lind said an increase of that size would not be possible.

The Green Party wants Sweden to become self-sufficient in sustainable renewable fuels. It also proposes a “green rebate” to support people living in rural areas and lower-income residents in cities.

According to Lind, petrol prices would rise by four kronor this autumn as temporary reductions disappear. A further increase of approximately two kronor would result from blending more renewable fuel into petrol, bringing the total increase to six kronor.

“We do not want to see any shock increases. It should happen in a controlled way,” Lind said, adding that households could be compensated through child benefits and cheaper public transport.

Lind said the increase would remain well below petrol prices in neighbouring Nordic countries. She also warned that the EU emissions trading system, which is due to take effect in 2028, could cause a sharper increase if Sweden does not increase renewable fuel blending now.
