Authorities in Hornafjörður are investigating suspected drug smuggling involving a speedboat that arrived from the Faroe Islands. Two individuals are in police custody following a significant operation that took place upon the boat’s arrival at the harbor.

The police at Hornafjörður raised suspicions about illegal drug-related activities during their customs inspection of the boat, which docked around midday. Sveinn Kristján Rúnarsson, the chief police officer for the region, confirmed that assistance was sought from the Customs Office and the central investigation unit of the Reykjavik police for further inquiry. He noted that the investigation is still in its early stages, leading to limited information being available.

Witnesses reported heavy police presence near the boat as it arrived shortly before 3 PM, with a substantial number of officers stationed at the dock. Reports indicate that some kind of cargo was unloaded from the vessel, which was then monitored by authorities throughout the night. A Coast Guard helicopter was also seen flying in the area late into the day.

The speedboat, registered in Sweden, is known for its high speed, capable of reaching up to thirty nautical miles per hour. According to tracking data, the boat departed Vestmanna in the Faroe Islands at 4:56 AM and arrived in Hornafjörður at 2:52 PM.
