Denmark welcomes new citizens at annual Christiansborg ceremony

New Danish citizens were officially welcomed at Christiansborg, Denmark’s parliament building, on Sunday during the annual citizenship day, DR reports.

Everyone who received Danish citizenship in 2025 was invited to the event, and the Folketing, Denmark’s parliament, expected around 2,000 people to attend.

Folketing Speaker Søren Gade opened the ceremony with a speech focusing on democracy, freedom and participation in associations. He urged the new citizens to engage in their communities and said citizenship brought both rights and responsibilities.

“We have given something to you. We expect you to give something back that we can share,” Gade said.

The event also included music, group singing and folk dancing. Participants were given the opportunity to speak with members of parliament and visit the Folketing’s premises.

Meanwhile, other applicants are still waiting for decisions on their citizenship applications. The government put the processing of applications on hold in March 2026, and processing had not resumed six months later, leaving thousands of applicants awaiting answers.
