Weekend brings cooler, more autumnal weather to Finland

Weather will turn cooler and more autumnal over the weekend, Yle reports, citing the Finnish Meteorological Institute. Ground frost is expected in many areas, while overnight temperatures in the Käsivarsi region of Lapland may fall below zero.

On Saturday, showers will be most common in central Finland. Rain may be continuous at times in North Ostrobothnia, Kainuu and southern Lapland.

Cloud cover will vary in southern and central Finland, although the south will be mostly dry. Northern and western Lapland will also remain dry, while much of the rest of Lapland will be cloudy.

Sunday is expected to be cloudy in many areas. Continuous rain will be concentrated in a region extending from southern Lapland to North Karelia. Western Finland may even see sunshine.

A low-pressure system over Russia is expected to strengthen winds on Sunday, particularly in eastern Lapland and Koillismaa. Strong winds are also likely in southern and eastern Finland.

“Individual trees may fall,” meteorologist Eveliina Tuovinen of the Finnish Meteorological Institute told the Finnish News Agency STT.

Saturday’s highest temperatures will reach around 18 to 19 degrees Celsius in southern Finland and about 15 degrees in central Finland. Some parts of Lapland will remain below 10 degrees.

Temperatures will fall further on Sunday. Highs will be around 16 to 17 degrees in southern Finland, with the warmest conditions in the southwest. Central Finland will remain below 15 degrees, while eastern Finland and Lapland may stay below 10 degrees.

Ground frost may occur overnight in southern and central Finland and northern Lapland. On Sunday night, frost is possible in Ostrobothnia and many parts of Lapland. Overnight temperatures in the Käsivarsi region may also fall below zero.

The week will begin mostly dry. Temperatures in southwestern Finland may still approach 20 degrees on Monday.

From Tuesday, the weather is expected to become wetter.

“From then on, there will be rain, areas of precipitation and showers every day,” Tuovinen said.
