Border Guard investigates aggravated bear hunting offences in Suomussalmi

Yle reports that the Border Guard is investigating four bear hunting-related offences or violations in the Kainuu region in August, including two aggravated hunting offences in Suomussalmi.

In one case, a female bear was shot despite apparently having a cub less than one year old. In the other, investigators suspect that a prohibited food lure was used to hunt a bear.

Authorities in Kuusamo also suspect that a bear was hunted using a food lure. The case is being investigated as a hunting offence. Border Guard personnel also encountered a man from Kuusamo who was transporting a loaded firearm in a passenger car without a protective cover.

In addition, Border Guard personnel recorded five minor state border offences involving unauthorised movement in the border zone. Two hunting dogs crossed into Russia.

Hunting with a dog running loose is prohibited in the border zone.
