AI-generated images, Lappeenranta, police investigation

Police estimate that 35 to 40 people were victims in a case involving AI-generated nude images in Lappeenranta, Yle reports. The number was initially believed to be more than 100.

A minor boy from Lappeenranta is suspected of creating the images of several underage girls. Police in Southeastern Finland have contacted the victims and will interview them in the coming weeks. Based on current information, all the victims live or have lived in Lappeenranta.

Police said the case has generated rumours and false information. Detective Chief Inspector Pia Katajala said all the nude images were created using artificial intelligence.

Katajala previously said that a list of names circulated on social media was not created by the suspect and was not a list of people involved in the case. The images were not sold or distributed further, police said.

Police reported last week that the underage suspect had been threatened and subjected to other harassment. Criminal reports have been filed in two cases. According to Katajala, the harassment has decreased.

Police expect processing the case to take several weeks or even months.
