Border Guard identifies likely model of Pelling drone

The Finnish Border Guard has identified the unmanned aircraft found on shoreline rocks in the Pelling archipelago as a likely Geoscan 701 type, Yle reports.

The Border Guard has launched an investigation into a possible territorial violation. Investigators are examining where, when and how the aircraft entered Finnish territory, as well as where and how any crossing of Finland’s national border took place.

Both state and civilian operators use this type of aircraft. The Border Guard said it would not confirm at this stage what the aircraft was used for, or which country or organisation operated it.

The investigation is continuing in cooperation with other authorities. To protect the inquiry, the Border Guard said it would not comment in more detail on the aircraft’s characteristics or on any other possible observations.
