Drills begin off Bornholm to map route for energy island cables

Drilling has begun in the seabed off Sose Bay on Bornholm to help Energinet determine the right location for the submarine cables planned for Bornholm Energy Island, DR reports.
The work is being carried out from a floating construction platform about 120 metres offshore. A large drilling machine will bore approximately 40 metres into the seabed.
According to Kim Søgaard Mikkelsen, project director for the infrastructure section of Bornholm Energy Island, the surveys will help identify the methods and equipment needed for guided drilling beneath the coast, allowing the cables to reach land and connect to offshore wind turbines.
The company GEO is conducting the drilling for Energinet, with Rønne Harbour serving as the logistics base.
The offshore surveys are expected to last two to three weeks. Follow-up investigations on land will take no more than four days.
Energinet has informed the shooting range, Rønne Harbour and the airport about the work. Ships will also be notified to ensure safe navigation.
Mikkelsen said the drilling will not affect people living on Bornholm, although the floating construction platform will be visible from the beaches near Sose.
