Faroe Islands record highest Nordic rate of fatal workplace accidents

Kringvarp Føroya reports that an average of one person dies in a workplace accident in the Faroe Islands each year, the highest rate in the Nordic countries.

The country has held this record for fatal workplace accidents for several years. The number of reported workplace accidents is also high, with the Accident Insurance Council receiving between 350 and 400 reports annually, or more than one a day.

The Workplace and Fire Inspection was reorganised on September 1. It is now called the Labour Inspection and will focus exclusively on labour market matters.

The Faroese government says it wants a zero-accident vision for workplace accidents.

The KVF programme Breddin is examining why there are so many workplace accidents in the Faroe Islands, what needs to change to reduce the number and what work is now being carried out after the issue received political priority.

The programme airs at 10am.
