Midflokkurin prepares tighter abortion law proposal

Midflokkurin is finalising a proposal to tighten several provisions in the abortion law, KVF reports. The planned changes include mandatory counselling and a reflection period allowing women to reconsider their decision before an abortion.

Under the current law, a woman must be offered counselling as a condition for obtaining an abortion. The proposal would change this to a requirement that she has received counselling.

The party also plans to introduce a specific reflection period before the procedure.

Under the current abortion law, an abortion can be performed after the 12th week without permission in special cases. Midflokkurin intends to partly remove or tighten these exceptions.

The party also plans to collect statistics, including through an anonymous questionnaire, to gain an overview of why women in the Faroe Islands choose to have abortions.

Midflokkurin chairman Steffan Klein Poulsen is due to discuss the proposal on KVF’s six o’clock news.
