Finland, KuPS, sexual offences

A former player for Kuopion Palloseura, a club in Finland’s football league, has been charged with several sexual offences, Yle reports. The 18-year-old is accused of aggravated rape, two counts of rape and attempted rape.

The alleged offences took place in Kuopio between the end of March and the end of May.

The prosecutor has also decided not to bring charges in two cases involving suspected rape and assault.

Lawyer Roope Tsupari, who represents the accused, told Yle that his client denies committing any offences.

The former KuPS player was detained at the end of May on suspicion of several sexual offences. KuPS terminated his contract immediately after the allegations emerged.

The club signed the player at the beginning of March. KuPS said the alleged offences were unrelated to his activities with the club and took place during his free time, rather than on a team trip, for example.

Yle is not publishing the player’s name because the case concerns charges and criminal allegations at this stage.
