Concerns rise over fast track system in Faroe Islands amid violent crime involving foreigners

Concerns regarding the fast track system in the Faroe Islands have intensified, particularly in relation to violent crime involving foreigners. Katrin Thorsvig Hansen, a prosecutor, emphasized that there is no direct correlation between the fast track system and the rate of criminality among immigrants.

The fast track system should be halted, a sentiment that gained widespread agreement during last week’s debate on the Prime Minister’s address. The situation became more alarming when it was revealed that a man accused of assaulting a woman in Sandá last April had a prior murder conviction before arriving in the islands.

In a recent editorial in Fría Barbara titled “Fast Track Murderers,” the gravity of the situation was highlighted. However, the individual currently in custody did not enter the Faroe Islands through the fast track system; he is Polish and is in the country based on the EU citizen agreement.

Hansen stated that it is incorrect to suggest that the fast track system alone is bringing in criminals, despite several incidents involving foreigners. She pointed out that, while there are more cases involving immigrants, there are also considerably more foreigners living in the Faroe Islands. The ratio of criminality remains consistent with previous levels.
