The United States says Iceland remains an important ally within NATO and a close partner of the United States and Europe, mbl.is reports, following a referendum on whether to resume accession talks with the European Union.
The statement was issued by Thomas “Tommy” Pigott, a spokesperson for the US Department of State.
The United States said it respected the referendum result and the sovereign decision of the Icelandic people.
It also expressed confidence that Iceland would remain a strong and important NATO ally and a close partner of the United States and Europe.
The US said it looked forward to further strengthening cooperation with Iceland in several areas, including security, energy, innovation, and economic and cultural ties.
The two countries will continue working together towards a shared vision of peace and prosperity, the statement said.
