Far-right leaders hail Iceland’s rejection of EU talks

Far-right leaders in Britain and France have congratulated Icelanders after voters rejected resuming accession talks with the European Union, mbl.is reported on Sunday.

About 53 per cent of voters opposed restarting the talks, while approximately 47 per cent supported the proposal.

Marine Le Pen, leader of France’s National Rally, said on X that the referendum had reminded people that EU membership was not the natural goal of every European democracy.

“At a time when some are pushing for a stronger federation and the transfer of sovereignty to the European Commission, this vote reminds us that another Europe is possible: a Europe of free, sovereign nations that work together voluntarily on matters of common interest,” she wrote.

Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, also posted on X: “Congratulations to Iceland on voting to keep their independence.”
