Icelanders reject renewed EU membership talks

Icelandic voters have rejected a proposal to reopen membership negotiations with the European Union, mbl.is reported on Sunday.

The result became final after the last figures were released from the Southwest constituency, where part of the vote had to be recounted. Nationwide, 53.0% voted against reopening the talks, while 47.0% voted in favour.

The Southwest constituency reported its final figures shortly before 10am. A total of 68,135 votes were counted, with turnout at 84.2%.

The constituency results were:

Yes: 31,780

No: 35,903

Blank ballots: 228

Invalid ballots: 224

Before the Southwest figures were published, the no vote stood at 52.8% nationally.
