Icelanders reject reopening EU membership talks

Icelandic voters have rejected a proposal to restart membership talks with the European Union, mbl.is reported.

The result became final after counting was completed in the Southwest constituency, where some ballots had to be recounted. Overall, 53.0 per cent of voters opposed reopening the talks, while 47.0 per cent supported it.

The final Southwest figures were 31,780 votes in favour and 35,903 against. A total of 228 ballots were blank and 224 were invalid.
