“Everything is still wide open. However, it is truly incredible to see the result this close, especially in the capital area,” Dagbjört Hákonardóttir, a member of parliament for Samfylkingin, told mbl.is at the Yes campaign’s election watch event.

She said the figures from Reykjavík gave her considerable hope, but added that the outcome could be decided by only a few votes.

Dagbjört joined others at Hafnarhús shortly before midnight in celebrating strong results for the Yes side.

She said she had noticed a change in her calls with voters during the previous 24 hours.

“I believe something happened during the last 24 hours that created momentum towards Yes. However, we know that the correct answer will emerge from the ballot boxes, whatever happens,” she said.

Asked whether she planned to stay awake for the final results, Dagbjört replied with a smile that she was planning to attend church with her daughter, who will be confirmed this year. She said she might take a nap and wake up very early instead.
