Independence Party leader backs keeping power in Iceland

Guðrún Hafsteinsdóttir, leader of Iceland’s Independence Party, has cast her vote and said Icelanders should continue managing their own affairs, mbl.is reports.

Icelanders themselves are best placed to protect the country’s interests, she said, adding that she trusted the nation to vote no and reject the transfer of decision-making powers outside Iceland.

On Saturday evening, Hafsteinsdóttir said she planned to attend an election night gathering at Kolaportið hosted by the Áfram Ísland campaign.

She said she looked forward to celebrating with the broad coalition that had united to defend Iceland’s sovereignty and independence.

Hafsteinsdóttir also said Icelanders would need to come together once the election result was known.

Tomorrow will bring a new day, she said, adding that everyone would wake up as Icelanders and that she would do her part to emphasise that they were all on the same team.
