Iceland EU referendum poll remains too close to call

A final Maskína poll before Iceland’s referendum on whether to continue negotiations with the European Union puts support for a yes vote at 50.4 per cent and support for no at 49.6 per cent, mbl.is reports. The difference is within the poll’s margin of error, making the outcome impossible to predict.

The poll was conducted on Friday among 3,274 respondents aged 18 and over from across Iceland. A total of 1,523 said they intended to vote yes, while exactly 1,500 said they would vote no. Another 170 were undecided and 82 declined to answer.

Small differences between groups

Men were more likely to say no than women, with 51.4 per cent of male respondents choosing no compared with 47.6 per cent of female respondents.

Respondents aged 30 to 69 were more likely to support a yes vote. The youngest group, aged 18 to 29, and those aged 70 and over were more likely to support no.

As in previous polls, respondents in the capital region were considerably more supportive of a yes vote than those elsewhere in the country. Some 56 per cent of respondents in the capital region said they intended to vote yes, compared with 40.5 per cent outside the region. Differences between the other groups were relatively small.
