KBH Metro Partner wins contract to operate Copenhagen Metro

KBH Metro Partner will take over operation and maintenance of Copenhagen’s M1 to M4 metro lines from September 2027, DR reports. The contract will run for 12 years until 2039, with an option to extend it by a further three years.

Metroselskabet, the company with overall responsibility for the metro, announced the decision after an extensive tender process. The new contract is worth 17 billion kroner.

“It is a large, complex and attractive operating task that has attracted significant international interest,” Søren Boysen, Metroselskabet’s director of operations and maintenance, said in a press release.

“Our most important task remains ensuring safe, stable, attractive and efficient metro operations for passengers every day,” he said.

Metroselskabet, Metro Service and KBH Metro Partner will now begin a transition and mobilisation phase ahead of the takeover. Metro Service currently operates the Copenhagen Metro.

Metroselskabet said it wants to retain as many of Metro Service’s skilled employees as possible with the new operator, citing their expertise and experience as crucial to maintaining the quality of operations.

Some 135 million passengers travelled on the Copenhagen Metro last year, according to Metroselskabet. The company is owned by the Danish state, the City of Copenhagen and Frederiksberg Municipality, but is required by law to put metro operations out to a private operator.
