Former minister and MP Olaf Olsen dies at 91

Former parliamentarian and government minister Olaf Olsen has died at the age of 91, KVF reports.

Olsen was a member of parliament from 1980 to 1994 and served as a government minister in two periods. From 1981 to 1983, he was responsible for fisheries and trade. From 1989 to 1991, he oversaw industry, health and agriculture, and also served as deputy prime minister.

Olsen was a ship’s captain before entering politics. He was managing director of the trawler company Vónin and Beta, a company that operated the Cuba trawlers. He later returned as director of both companies.

He also served on the boards of the Fisheries Council and Føroya Banki, and chaired the board of Fiskamarknaðurin.

Olsen was deputy prime minister in the government coalition formed by the People’s Party, the Republican Party and the Union Party from 1989 to 1991, when Jógvan Sundstein was prime minister.
