Water boiling advisory lifted across most of Korpilahti

Yle reports that the water boiling advisory in the Korpilahti district of Jyväskylä has been lifted across most of the area after water samples were found to be clean.

The advisory remains in force in part of the Tähtiniemi area, where the Alkio College is located. It has been lifted elsewhere in Korpilahti and in the areas served by the Moksi and Kärkinen water cooperatives.

Jyväskylä’s environmental health authority and water company Alva have monitored the quality of tap water since a leak was detected in the network. Samples taken from different parts of the network showed no abnormalities in water quality.

The leak was caused by a pipeline break on Monday evening. At its peak, more than 700 water-use points were without water on Monday and Tuesday.

The break was later located in an underwater pipeline. Divers confirmed on Tuesday evening that the leak was in Lake Päijänne, near Korpilahti harbour.

According to Alva’s water services manager Atte Pakkanen, breaks in underwater pipelines are not entirely unusual, although they occur less often than breaks in pipelines on land.

The pipeline will not be replaced completely because the damage is localised, Alva said. The pipeline dates from the 1970s but has not deteriorated or become brittle throughout its length.
