Foreign minister says she received serious threats over EU views

Foreign Minister Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir has received serious threats because of her views on possible membership talks with the European Union, mbl.is reports. Police are handling the matter.

Asked on the Bítid programme on Bylgjan whether she had been threatened or received serious threats because of her views, Gunnarsdóttir said that she had.

“The police are dealing with this, carrying out assessments and doing what is necessary,” she said. Gunnarsdóttir added that she considered herself safe, particularly when fighting for what she believed in: improving living standards in Iceland and unlocking opportunities, as she said happened when the European Economic Area Agreement was adopted.

“The police assess what is happening, and that is simply the situation,” she said before the interview was ended. Presenter Heimir Karlsson was then heard saying: “That is bad.”
