Seppo Välinen chosen to lead Jyväskylä City Theatre

Seppo Välinen has been chosen as the new director of Jyväskylä City Theatre, according to information obtained by Yle. The city’s Culture and Sports Committee made the decision on Thursday.

Välinen has served as director of Vaasa City Theatre since late 2019.

A total of 34 people applied for the position in Jyväskylä. Twenty four of them held the higher academic degree required for the post. All applicants who met the eligibility requirements were entitled to vote in the appointment election.

The position became available because the theatre’s current director, Marietta Kunnas, will retire in March 2027. Kunnas has led Jyväskylä City Theatre since 2021.

The aim is for Välinen to start in the position at the beginning of April 2027.

The theatre director is responsible for managing the theatre’s operations, staff and finances, as well as planning its programme and meeting its objectives.
