Ukraine-bound boats delayed until spring 2027

The two high-speed boats promised to Ukraine by the Faroe Islands have not yet been built and are now expected to be ready for handover in spring 2027, Kringvarp Føroya reports.

The boats are included in this year’s budget, which allocates four million kroner for their construction. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the delay was caused by lengthy discussions with Ukraine over the boats’ equipment through the Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation.

Herálvur Joensen, permanent secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said in written comments to Kringvarp Føroya that the communication had taken longer than expected.

An agreement was reached this summer with Brim Boats, a boatbuilder in Eiði, and the boats are expected to be completed in spring 2027.

The promise was made in July last year, when Sirið Stenberg, then minister for foreign affairs, visited the presidential palace in Kyiv and offered Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy two high-speed boats to be built in the Faroe Islands.
